To ensure quality, Bakkafrost has melded a millennia-old, ancient seafaring tradition with modern approaches to food. We live and work alongside the fjords where we raise our salmon. We are bent on perfection, and take the time and effort to create quality products.
We take pride in controlling every aspect of producing salmon. We harvest feed from the cold, clean Faroese waters and feed it to our salmon. This creates the delicious product on your plate. Everything we do is done with a mind on sustainability, detail, and the pursuit of perfection.
The Bakkafrost salmon farm in Gøtuvík is ASC (Aquaculture Stewardship Counsil) certified making it the first salmon farm in the Faroe Islands to be ASC certified.
The ASC standard was developed in cooperation with the WWF (World Wildlife Fund). The standard is seen as the most stringent in the aquaculture industry and outlines over 400 individual points with of requirement regarding fish welfare, lice, smolt production, feed production, and the environment.
Bakkafrost´s Chain of Custody has been ASC certified and the certification of more farms is underway.
Founded in 2010 by WWF and IDH (Dutch Sustainable Trade Initiative) the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) is an independent, not-for-profit organisation with global influence.
ASC aims to be the world's leading certification and labelling body for responsibly farmed seafood. The ASC’s primary role is to manage the global standards for responsible aquaculture - standards which were developed by the WWF Aquaculture Dialogues.
ASC works with aquaculture producers, seafood processors, retail and foodservice companies, scientists, conservation groups, and consumers to:
Recognise and reward responsible aquaculture through the ASC aquaculture certification programme and seafood label.
Promote best environmental and social choices when buying seafood.
Contribute to transforming seafood markets towards sustainability.
With its partners, the ASC runs an ambitious programme to transform the world's seafood markets and promote the best environmental and social aquaculture performance. This means increasing the availability of responsibly produced, certified seafood to buyers and promoting the use of the ASC logo. The logo sends a strong message to consumers about the environmental and social integrity of the product they are purchasing.
The ASC is much more than a standards-holding body. It is actively transforming the aquaculture industry with its market-based approach. This work is underpinned by the organisation’s:
Credibility
ASC standards are developed according to ISEAL guidelines – multi-stakeholder, transparent, incorporating science-based performance metrics.
Effectiveness
By addressing the industry’s key impacts, ASC is minimising the environmental and social footprint of commercial aquaculture.
Added value
The ASC consumer label helps promote responsible practices – it connects the farm to the marketplace.
