26.11.2021

Construction is expected to commence in early 2022

A year ago, Bakkafrost signed a contract with J&K Petersen Contractors to prepare the site in Skálavík, where all broodstock operations will be centralized at a new state-of-the-art broodstock facility. The project of preparing the site is now completed, and yesterday, on 25th November, the site was handed over to Bakkafrost.

The construction project is now in tender, and construction is expected to commence in early 2022. The construction project is organized in four stages, and the facility is expected to be completed in January 2026.

In recent years, Bakkafrost and the Faroese Aquaculture Research Station have worked together on preserving the Faroese salmon species, and since 2017, Bakkafrost staff has successfully been working on developing and improving the breeding process. They have now identified the genome of the Faroese species, and the researchers are confident that in the future they will have Faroese broodstock, which is resistant to diseases and lice, and moreover will have good growth and quality attributes.
The company aims to supply all farming operations in the Faroe Islands with roe from the Faroese species by 2023.

The new broodstock facility in Skálavík is expected to commence production within 2-3 years.
